What you need to know about Asscher Cut Diamonds

The Asscher cut, one of the most recognizable diamond cuts, is known for its unique style and timeless elegance. Developed around 1902 by the Asscher brothers in the Netherlands, this cut has an almost cult-like following among fine jewelry enthusiasts. In this blog we delve deeper into the characteristics, history and popularity of Asscher cut diamonds.

The characteristics of the Asscher Cut

The Asscher Cut diamond is square in shape with rounded corners, which creates a visual effect that resembles a stop sign. This cut is actually a variant of the emerald cut, but has a higher crown, wider facets and a smaller table facet. This results in a deeper and brighter sparkle, which is often described as an endless hall of mirrors. The number of facets in a traditional Asscher cut diamond is 58, but modern variants can have up to 74 facets, which further enhances the brilliance.

The history of the Asscher Cut

Joseph and Abraham Asscher, the founders of the famous Asscher Diamond Company, introduced the Asscher cut in the early 20th century. This cut quickly became popular during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, an era characterized by geometric designs and bold, stylish aesthetics. The Asscher cut fit perfectly with the fashion of the time and became a favorite among the elite.

In 2001, the original Asscher cut was redesigned and patented as the Royal Asscher cut by the descendants of the Asscher brothers. This modern version has more facets and even greater brilliance, which further increased the popularity of this cut.

The popularity of the Asscher Cut

The Asscher cut is popular for its classic and vintage look. This cut is a favorite among those who love the refined and historic charm that this diamond brings. Notable celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Jessica Alba have chosen this cut for their engagement rings, which has contributed to its enduring popularity.

What you should pay attention to when buying an Asscher Cut Diamond

When choosing an Asscher cut diamond there are a few important factors to keep in mind:

– Quality of the cut: The brilliance and fire of an Asscher cut diamond strongly depend on the quality of the cut. Look for a diamond with a good or excellent cut quality to ensure the best sparkle.

– Carat weight: Asscher cut diamonds show their weight differently than round diamonds. Due to the deeper cut, an Asscher cut diamond may appear smaller than a round diamond of the same carat weight. Please take this into account when choosing the size.

– Color and clarity: Because Asscher cut diamonds have large, open tables and wide facets, inclusions and color may be more visible than with other cuts. Choose a diamond with a higher clarity grade (VS2 or higher) and a color grade of H or better for a visually appealing result.

– Certification: Always buy an Asscher cut diamond that has been certified by a reputable laboratory such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This provides certainty about the quality and authenticity of the diamond.

The Asscher Cut in modern jewelry

Today, the Asscher cut remains a popular choice for engagement rings and other fine jewelry. The cut is often associated with a sense of sophistication and elegance, ideal for those looking for a timeless yet unique piece. The geometric precision and brilliant clarity of the Asscher cut make it a striking choice for any piece of jewelry.
