3 Top Tips for Container Gardening

Having sets of tubs, pots, tubs, and half-cylinder barrels brimming with flowers can complement the looks of your garden. But container gardening is not only for that purpose because it’s quite practical too. Chances are, this is especially true if you have a smaller garden space, or you’re in an apartment where you only have the balcony for your plants.

Container gardening is the solution if you have the situation above, but it does not mean that you’re only limited to some plants. Chives, thyme, basil, and other herbs are ideal on pots, and they can grow at almost any spot in your house. Read on, as this article gives you some of the best tips for your container gardening project.

Mind the container sizes

You might want you to take note that it’s easier to grow plants in taller containers than short ones. This is for the reason that bigger pots can have more soil, and such can ensure that your plants stay moist longer and can stand varying outside temperatures. Smaller containers tend to dry out more often, especially during summer.

Consider also the type of plant you want to grow in each of your tall planter. Plants have different shapes and sizes on their root system, and the rate of growth varies as well. Also, you should also be aware that light-shaded pots can maintain cooler temperatures compared to dark containers.

Almost all plants are excellent with pots

If you’re wondering what to make use of your extra plants or sprouts, then you might want to add them to your container garden display. One of the ideal plants you may put in your pot is the Cosmos. This flower looks like daisies, and it creates an illusion of movement to your pots. It is best combined with plants that have silvery shrubbery, but can work as a stand-alone too.

Another flower that can thrive on pots is the evergreen Clematis. This flower loves to trail, and this is ideal to be placed on the edge of the pot. Partner it with spring blooming bulbs for a more colourful effect.

Garden soil is not ideal with pots

For the reason of imbalanced nutrients effect of garden soil in a pot, you can opt to use the commercial multi-purpose potting mix compost instead. And since garden soils are quite dense, it is also difficult to transfer pots in another spot in your garden.

Also, that additional weight gets compact in time whenever you water the plant. Using a potting mix allows you to add nutrients easier, while it is quite difficult with garden soils. The idea here is not only about the survival of the plants, but to let the thrive on container gardening as well.

Pots and containers give home gardeners like you the benefit of flexibility, and it also allows you to have fun in trying out various planting methods and design as well. Container planting offers another layer of depth to your garden, making soft spots look livelier, and enhancing gloomy areas.
