Common Hazards when Using Cranes and How to Prevent Them

Using a crane can speed up the work and make it more convenient. Manually lifting an object to a specific area, especially if elevated, can be time-consuming and troublesome. However, the use of this equipment doesn’t come without risks. Below are some of the most common hazards when using a crane and tips on how to prevent them.

Workspace hazard

Staff who are working around the area are at risk of being injured due to various reasons. To prevent this from happening, secure the work area to ensure that only the key people are there during the operation. The less traffic, the lower the chances of people getting hurt in case something unexpected happens. Put warnings signs too, to remind employees about the potential dangers so they will be careful. Everyone who is part of the operation should wear protective gear, and must also be aware of the safety checks and precautions that they should always abide by.

Weather hazard

The weather also plays a vital role in the safety of the operation. It’s ideal to work during nice weather, but you can’t be sure if the weather will cooperate all the time. When it starts to turn unpleasant, it can still be difficult to stop work, especially if you want to complete it as soon as possible. However, cranes can only withstand certain wind speeds or impacts. If it’s going over its limit, it’s best to pause the operation until it gets better. Heavy wind can cause the equipment to tip over or make the hoist swing uncontrollably, causing it to hit something.

Falling materials

It’s one of the top causes of deaths in crane operation. To prevent this from happening, make sure that the load is properly secured before lifting. Do not go over the limit of what it can carry. Ensure that the hoist is in excellent condition too. Everyone included in the operation must wear security gear, as well. No matter how safe you think the process is, ensure that employees do not go under the load.

Overloading

Overloading can cause the crane to be off-balance and may also cause the broom to break, tip, or malfunction, causing the cargo to fall. Ensure that everyone follows the security procedures and see to it that the load is within the capacity of the crane. No matter how trained or experienced the operator is, he should not rely on estimation or guessing when it comes to the weight of the load. He must know the specific weight to ensure that it is within the limit.

Electrical hazard

Electrical problems may happen if the operator accidentally hits live wires and power lines. To avoid this, make a thorough inspection of the place to determine areas that may be at risk of electrical hazards so you can let the staff know, and they will be more careful. Cover and label wiring properly, as well.

Keep these potential hazards in mind and know how to avoid them when operating a crane. If you need to hire a crane around Peterborough, you can find crane hire in Peterborough that also provides a qualified and trained operator that will ensure the safety of operation.
