Buying a home can be one of the most exciting times for any family. It can also end up being one of the most stressful times for any family. There are certainly a lot of things to consider during this time, but if done correctly, the right house can be a true game changer.
Jacques Poujade, the Managing Partner of LendPlus (an alternative lender), knows a lot about making a home purchase. He works with those shopping for a home directly. He recently shared with us four things families should look for when buying a house.
Fenced in Backyard
In just about every city, people who are buying a home will look for some type of fenced in backyard. It might not always be an affordable option, but it is something that provides a lot of value specifically for people who have pets or small children.
A backyard that is fenced in can free up a lot of spare time that might be used to go to a local park or something else instead. It is important for pets to get outside for obvious reasons, but younger children love it as well. A nice fenced in backyard is always going to help a home hold its value as well.
Additional Living Space
Just about every home is going to have the basic rooms everyone expects. Having just one additional living space can really make a huge difference. It can be hard for families to share their living room with a kids’ playroom. Or perhaps, you are looking to have a secluded space in the house where you can work out or get some quiet time.
Depending on a person’s location, many people can get that extra room with a finished basement. For those who live in areas that don’t have a lot of basements, a den, or a room over a garage can do the trick as well. You can also consider closing in your porch area and creating a sunroom. This extra room provides additional property value as it allows for more space for activities in the home.
A Bathtub
Most people seem to prefer taking a shower over a bath, but it is still extremely important to have at least one bathtub in the home. Not only is it very relaxing to have a bath every occasionally, but it comes in handy when cleaning small children or even pets.
Without a bathtub, families need to get a little bit creative as far as cleaning is concerned in some cases. It is not completely impossible to pull off, but it just feels a lot more like a home with at least one bathtub in the biggest bathroom.
Location
There is nothing more important when it comes to looking for a home than location. A home can have everything a family is looking for, but if it is not in the right location, none of it really matters.
Location matters because of several factors. A home needs to be close to where people work. A home needs to be in a good part of town, and the schools need to be good if the children are attending. Sometimes people need to make compromises to get the right location, but in the end, it is almost always worth it.
