Digital marketer and entrepreneur Erkan Kemiksizgil knows what it takes to build a successful business from scratch. With years of experience as a serial entrepreneur, he has seen the highs and lows that come with growing a business, including the setbacks and failures that are a necessary part of any venture. He sat down with us to share some insights on the most common things successful entrepreneurs do when things go wrong.
Remember pain is temporary
Failure is a given in every venture worth that is worth pursuing. The good thing is that it’s going to be there forever. The pain and frustration you feel is part of the process of building something that is going to be worth all that sweat and tears. It can be helpful to note that victory won’t be that sweet if you didn’t go through the tough parts of the journey. Grit your teeth, do what you have to do, and take comfort in knowing that the pain will pass.
Take a break
You can’t really grow a successful enterprise if you are running on fumes. Burnout is a real thing among entrepreneurs, so take time to prioritize your health and well-being. Eat healthy, meditate, and work out, even for just 30 minutes a day. These wellness breaks can go a long way towards keeping you at your best so you can deliver your best at work.
Eye on the prize
Setbacks and failures can easily distract us and make us want to pursue other less difficult things. However, to succeed in any venture, you need to focus on the ultimate goal. What do you want to create and how far along are you towards that goal? How can you tweak what you are doing right now so you can be a step closer towards that goal?
Stick to solutions
Sometimes failures can lead to blaming or worse, the desire to quit. A surefire way to avoid being distracted from your goal is to stick to solutions. Keep your mind on this narrow lane of focus so you don’t get distracted by things that won’t bring you closer to your goal.
Accept the facts
Being realistic can go a long way towards keeping you focused on what will work and what won’t. Stick to the facts so you know what you can control and what is beyond your control.
Change your attitude and be positive
Sometimes, we unknowingly adopt a defeatist attitude especially if we see things go wrong one after the other. Check yourself once you start to think that things are going nowhere. Take a realistic look at your progress. Even if you are not moving as fast you would like, chances are you are moving forward, and this is one reason to stay positive and keep on moving.
I have experienced failure so many times in this business and it’s not really the best place to be in. However, the most successful businesses in the world today have failed many times on the way to success. Don’t fear failure. Embrace it and know how to deal with it. This is the only way to stand back up no matter how many times you fall.
