Travelling the World on a Shoestring Budget

Learning about other cultures and societies through travel is an incredibly rewarding experience on an emotional level, but it will likely not be rewarding experience for your finances.

However, the good news is that, with a bit of research, it is in fact possible to see the world without going broke. Here’s how to have a memorable trip on a shoestring budget.

Find Cheap Flights

Getting to your destination is often the most expensive part of any trip, but there is a multitude of airfare comparing websites to help you find the best possible prices.

These sites also generally include a notification system where you can sign up to receive notifications when the price of a flight to your destination drops so you’ll know as soon as it happens.

Being flexible with your dates may also help you find cheaper flights as peak travel periods will always be costlier.

Be Smart with Accommodation

While the idea of staying in a 5-star hotel in a foreign country is an incredible one, it isn’t a reality to most travellers. However, technology has made it vastly easier to find cheap accommodation no matter where in the world you’re travelling to.

Apps like Airbnb and Couchsurfing may just be your saving grace and you’ll also get a different experience of the places you’re travelling to by staying alongside locals.

Use Public Transport

Much like the convenience of online NZ sports betting, it’s a lot more convenient to hire a car when visiting a foreign country this may be an added expense you simply cannot afford.

Before heading to your destination, do plenty of research surrounding public transport and plan your itinerary accordingly. Check to see if Uber is available for the hours outside of public transport to ensure secure, personalised travel or get some exercise and walk!

Eat Like a Local

Eating in a foreign country doesn’t have to be costly exercise if you’re smart about it.

Make a few local friends and ask them about their favourite places to eat or do research about the street food scene in the country you’re travelling to.

Shopping for food at a supermarket and cooking is also a great way to save money.

Look Out for Free Activities

You’ll be surprised how many free activities there are to take advantage of and many of these can be found just by walking a city.

You’ll get to soak up the ambience of the city, meet locals, and you’ll likely get to enjoy less touristy areas. Many countries also have plenty of museums, galleries, and cathedrals that are free to visit.

Use a Money-Tracking App

Having a strict budget also means keeping track of your spending. Using a money-tracking app is your best bet when it comes to keeping your spending in check as you can set an overall budget and subtract from that as you travel, allowing you to keep track of what you’ve spent and what you have left.
